After working in corporate marketing for several years, I struck out on my own in 2009, starting a home-party business and doing part-time marketing consulting work.
As a new entrepreneur on a budget, I looked for cost-efficient ways to get the word out to my network about my new venture without spamming everyone or spending hours playing phone tag. Facebook and LinkedIn were getting more popular by the minute, so I used them to share what I was doing – and it worked!
Along the way I made plenty of mistakes, but I also got my first consulting clients and was able to generate some part-time income from my home-party business.
Pretty soon, people I knew who worked in small businesses starting asking me questions about marketing with email and social media. Now I spend most of my time teaching other people how to use those tools to promote their businesses.
